In fact, they have the impression of “running the store alone”, sometimes even against everyone. Often with the complicity of the HR manager, who shares their distress. An Excom team has specific characteristics linked to its composition and its missions, which require particular coordination. To create this collective, we must build a relationship of trust which will make collaboration not only possible, but ultimately desired by everyone. This is what I describe, with examples of application and numerous testimonials, in my book “Knowledge-Innovation, the innovation attitude to adapt to the changing world” (link with the site) and of which I give you some keys in this article.

<strong style="color:#000000>1) An Excom is not a team like the others/strong>

Through its mission which consists of piloting and implementing the strategy, leading a Management Committee constitutes a challenge in itself. Management involves a strategic vision and the ability to train teams to achieve it. This challenge is reinforced by its specific composition. Made up of directors, who therefore all have a different personality and management history, the Excom is a place of diversity which can become fertile ground for collective intelligence or, on the contrary, that of the affirmation of silos of power which reinforces competition.

strong style=”color:#000000>2) The relationship of trust to build and maintain/strong>

Creating a relationship of trust between directors requires special attention both during Excom meetings and outside. Ensuring that everyone agrees to “trust each other” will require a certain exemplary attitude on the part of the director, just as that of the co-director will influence the rest of the teams. To unite the management team, despite a certain competition inherent in each person’s objectives, it is important to work prospectively to measure the risks and the necessary solidarity in the event of collective failure to achieve the objectives.

strong style=”color:#000000>3) Collective intelligence in development/strong>

Developing the collective intelligence of an Excom involves bringing the management team into a transformation process that will affect collective functioning and individual behavior. Support from a specialized coach will make it possible to define formal moments by structuring them (meetings, seminars, Excom-level projects), to promote moments of celebrating successes necessary to maintain a positive state of mind.

strong style=”color:#000000>4) A charter to which everyone commits/strong>

To create the conditions for this trust, it is essential to share expected behaviors and, on the contrary, those considered unacceptable by the entire team. An Excom charter formalizes this stage of commitment to the “do’s” and “don’ts” which is useful on an ongoing basis and also when new members join the Excom.

strong style=”color:#000000>5) Individual enrichment

By developing as a team, Excom members benefit from this leadership dynamic for their own personal development. The support actions of an Excom reflect on each of the directors, enriching their personal toolbox and potentially triggering the release of their leadership potential. It’s a real “win win” individual and collective!

“Alone, we go faster but, together, further” this proverb applies to many leaders who come to consult me to help them lead their Excom towards the achievement of common objectives.
